As Benjamin Franklin said many years ago, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
It’s up to us to keep our children safe (to the best of our abilities!) and often this means
educating ourselves, looking ahead for potential dangers, and talking, talking, talking to our
kids from the time they are born!
Laura Stack, a best-selling author and internationally renowned speaker, is on a mission to
educate parents on the dangerous truth about today’s marijuana. Learn more at:
Laura spent three days this week in San Luis Obispo at SLO High School, speaking to parents,
educators, community members and students about the tragic death of her 19-year-old son
Johnny, who took his life after his descent into addiction to high-potency marijuana and
cannabis-induced psychosis.
At her event last Tuesday evening (May 7th 2024), Laura shared her recommendations to parents:
1. Parents should educate themselves first, and then begin talking to their children about
the dangers of today’s marijuana early on.
2. Set clear NO USE rules. (Note that 80% of teens whose parents use, will use themselves,
and THC is VERY dangerous to the developing brain!!)
3. Keep track of your children – always connect with other parents to make sure they will
be home and do not allow marijuana in their house.
4. Come up with a code word (i.e. sick) and be prepared to pick them up whenever
needed.
5. Help children to prepare for social pressures (role play with different situations so they
can withstand peer pressure).
6. Begin random drug testing at age 12. DRUG TESTING WORKS – it gives your child a
reason to say NO to peer pressure (best excuse to use at a party). Note: by high school,
3 out of 10 kids are using.
7. Teach your children a healthy fear of today’s marijuana – THC levels are incredibly high
(no comparison to marijuana of the past). Note: Edibles containing high levels of THC
have caused a 600% increase in young people requiring the services of Poison Control.
Packaging for such products are almost identical to the traditional food/candy packaging. (Doritos, Gushers, Nerd Ropes, etc.)
“Pearls ~ Parenting Practices” was written with the intent of helping new parents establish the
beneficial habits of reading and talking to their children from the very beginning, to help ensure
their healthy development and safety from dangerous exposure to marijuana and other
harmful substances and experiences.
